VU BS Lateral Bachelor of Science in Bioinformatics (2.5 Years)
The BS-Lateral in Bioinformatics is tailored for students who have already completed 14 years of education in fields other than Bioinformatics and now wish to step into this rapidly advancing interdisciplinary domain. Bioinformatics bridges biology with computer science to decode and interpret complex biological data, making it vital for areas such as genomics, drug development, personalized medicine, and biotechnology.
This 2.5-year program equips learners with strong foundations in computational biology, programming, data analytics, and biological database management. It prepares graduates for diverse careers in biomedical research, pharmaceuticals, healthcare IT, and the biotech industry. Students will also develop expertise in algorithm design, machine learning applications, and genomic data analysis, positioning them as valuable professionals in academia, research labs, and technology-driven life sciences sectors.
By integrating biological sciences with advanced computational methods, the program provides a fast-track entry into the dynamic and expanding world of bioinformatics.
Objectives
Equip learners with a strong foundation in bioinformatics, covering areas such as genomic data analysis, structural biology, and computational simulations.
Build proficiency in programming (Python, R), statistics, and large-scale data analytics for use in biological research and industrial settings.
Provide hands-on training in next-generation sequencing (NGS) interpretation, applications of artificial intelligence in biology, and computational tools for drug design.
Prepare students for professional roles in biotechnology organizations, research institutions, pharmaceutical industries, and healthcare-related data science.
Eligibility Criteria
a) Applicants should possess an Associate Degree, BSc, or an equivalent qualification (14 years of education) from an HEC-recognized university/college with a minimum of 45% marks or a CGPA of 2.00 on a 4.00 scale.
b) Candidates coming from disciplines other than bioinformatics (such as biology, chemistry, or computer science) will be required to complete prescribed deficiency courses during a bridging semester.
Note: Admission is granted strictly on open merit, and the program is presently offered only to students residing in Pakistan.
Award of Degree
Degree Requirements
To qualify for the BS-Lateral in Bioinformatics, students are required to complete the prescribed credit hours outlined in the curriculum and maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.00 on a 4.00 scale.Program Duration
The program spans at least five semesters, which includes an additional bridging semester for students entering from non-bioinformatics disciplines.
